Namibian Birding
NAMIBIAN BIRDING FAQ'S:
1. Do I need to bring my own Telescope?
Prof Phil Hockey brings a telescope on the tour to ensure everybody gets great views of the birds we see. This is mostly used on the waders as well as some of the raptors e.g. Grey Kestrel. You are however more than welcome to bring along your own scope if you so wish.
2.What birding equipment should I bring along?
Bring along you binoculars and bird book as well a small notebook and pen. You will not need a spotlight or tapes: we have these and make judicious use of them only when required.
3. I don’t know my birds that well, will I fit in?
The tour is geared to all levels of birder and we will do our best to put everybody on the birds we are looking for. You do not need to be familiar with the Namibian species: as long as you are keen and can help spot birds, we will sort out the I.D issues.
4. Will we be able to photograph the birds we see?
Great photo opportunities well present themselves but this is not a photographic safari. Our man focus is on finding the birds and being able to get great views from a spotting point of view. If time allows you may try get photos’ but this is not our main focus.
5.Do I need my own bird book?
Yes! We recommend that you have your own field guide: this will definitely increase your enjoyment of the tour. We will supply you with a comprehensive daily checklist for the tour. We updated the checklist every evening.
6. Do I need to be very fit?
Some of the locations we visit are very remote and will require you to negotiabte some rough terrain so a reasonable level of fitness is required. However the days we venture into these locations can also be spent relaxing in the beautiful camp sites we use.
7.What is the maximum group size?
We run the tour with a minimum of 16 guests and a maximum of 18. We have found that this group size works well.
8. How do we decide where we go for the day?
The itinerary has been refined over years of running this tour to ensure we visit the best locations for the various target species. If any changes are to be made on the day, for unforeseen reasons, Prof Phil Hockey and the lead guide will make alternative route arrangements.
